What fan favorites were axed? I think the only guys not in Brawl from Melee are:
Mewtwo (Lucario is functionally similar)
Young Link (Toon Link is functionally similar)
Dr. Mario
Pichu (who everyone bitched was a waste of a roster spot when Melee came out)
Roy (replaced with Ike)
Of them, I would have included Dr. Mario, because he's no longer a clone. They completely overhauled Mario's moveset, and having the classic Mario moveset would have been ace. Plus, he throws pills! His Final Smash could have been awesome.

Roy too.
Mewtwo is very different from Lucario, Young Link came back as Toon Link, Roy was just a powerful Marth clone which was done better by replacing him with Ike, Pichu was worthless, and Dr Mario would have been really nice. The flood is useless and without a quick way to do Mario Tornado, he feels like a different character. I see his Final Smash being awesome as well..

Oh no, not the roster debate!
The only character that was removed who wasn't an afterthought clone weirdo was Mewtwo, and in their place we got lots of fun new guys to fuck with. I fucking LOVE Lucario and Pokemon Trainer!
Wolf really isn't Fox 3. True, the Landmaster being used by all three Star Fox characters was lazy (Wolf calling in an airstrike and Falco piloting an Arwing would have been MUCH cooler), but comparing Fox, Falco, and Wolf is akin to comparing Ryu, Ken, and Gouken. |
Yeah well...I just want Mewtwo back!
Also, they forgot the best Melee stage...Brinstar Depths.

His final smash should have encased the players immediately around him in a giant glass jar, while he throws pills on top of them. The player could control and rotate the pills. Having a pill dropped on you would he akin to getting hit by Kirby's down+b attack, and making a line of the proper color with a character in the middle of it is an instakill. Maybe they could even color the pills based on character color in team battles!

Roy actually was the Marth clone for noobs. I don't think he was top tier, but Marth was actually a much more exploitable character than Roy and was ranked significantly higher than Roy.

Roy was 7th tier, Marth was 2nd tier.
And before FNJ says anything, yes, the fact that there are actually tier rankings for these games is moronic.

If I were in charge, doc Mario and Mewtwo would have come back, even if doctor Mario had to be a costume like classic wario was.
Then again, I'd have made classic Wario a separate character, with shoulder charges and dragon hats and shit. I had a sweet idea to make the tetris blocks a playable character, too.

The thing about them was that Marth did extra damage by hitting with the tip of his blade, promoting careful spacing and careful strikes. Roy was physically stronger, bit lacked this. This meant that a good Marth player would always have higher damage output. Also, who actually fell for a fully charged B from Roy? That shot might have been an instakill, bit it took about a month to charge.
I was a bit of a Marth affectionado in melee

Yeah, I wish Wario played more like Classic Wario. Or rather, entirely like Classic Wario. His Final Smash should have been the old Six Golden Coins commercial. Dunno what it would have done though. Temporary paralysis?

Yes! Shoulder Rams, Headbutts, Butt Slams, and Status Changes! Wario would change every time he got hit! Fireball hit him? Fire Wario will damage anything he touches! Ice Wind got you down? Snowball Wario can roll into foes! Just ate all the food from a Prize Ball? Fat Wario is invincible, strong, and slow! We still need Bat, Zombie, Balloon, and Flat transformations though.

So have you seen all those fantastic mods for Brawl? I'm hoping eventually we can come up with our own events.

All I've seen is crappy color edits. I've heard there was one that rebalances and removes random tripping, but why would a game like this need rebalancing?

I didn't play Brawl because they didn't make Billy Coen one of the third party characters.

While you were out, they've come up with complete model edits, different movesets, texture changes, music changes, sound effect swaps, vertex-edited stages, rearranged menu screens, and several global balance kits (including one that godmods everybody). The stage builder just isn't worth using anymore.

I remember the original Brawl Plus mod made every stage as Final Destination-y as possible, which was hella gay.
I want to hold my own Brawl/Melee tournaments with my own rules. Fuck the so-called "tournament rules". You're not Nintendo, you don't make the rules.

I always thought the beauty of Smash in general is that you get to play however you choose.
Sure, some people don't like items, many others do, and that's fine.
No one makes the rules.
Also, I really miss Dr. Mario, he was by far my most used character in Melee.

Basically this...the Dr. Mario thing in Melee was awesome...yeah he was almost the same...but that's even more reason to just to a swap like Wario got. Hell even Nurse Peach would've been a cool edition with her pulling out a pill instead of Toad or something. Maybe Luigi can be a proctologist and his little running attack can be switched for him trying to smear his fecal ridden hands on his opponent.
If I had one major complaint with the roster, it was how it was set up. I might be alone in this, but when I picked up the game, I tried out the new characters, then I basically went back to what I enjoyed most with the old characters. Yeah, Meta Knight and Diddy Kong were used a lot, but I basically tried out guys like Pit and King Dedede and just decided to cast them aside. In my honest opinion, these characters might've served better as unlockable characters. I felt that was kind of lazy...make Dedede a hidden character and switch him out with Captain Falcon or something. I probably would've been interested in wanting to play as them more if you made me work to unlock them. And damn was Wolf disappointing....especially as the last guy you unlock. I think he along with Toon Link and Jigglypuff were most likely late editions, which is why they aren't part of Sub Space (at least not from what I remember). I would've preferred maybe Ridley or some other cool idea.

Jigglypuff is the most popular pokemon in japan. That's why she's been in every game. I actually really liked dedede, but I've always had a thing for big damage characters like that. And I like captain falcon being unlockable for one reason: the citadels that Ayer when you unlocked him. That was awesome!
Personally I enjoyed wolf, because of the Gouken factor that I keep mentioning. I wasn't a fan of toon link, though.

Jigglypuff, Toon Link, and Star Wolf can all be fought in Subspace.

Yes, but I don't recall them being part of the story. You just sort of encounter a secret door.
