I've had Dish for a little over 2 years now. The dish has gone out 3 times total over those 2 years. I have no issues at all with their reliability.

I've had satellite for about 5 years now and it's only gone out maybe 4 times and even then, only for a few minutes when it's a crazy storm or blizzard outside.

I've answered the phones for cable companies and had customers call in and insist someone come and make the cable work again during a power outage.

The only reason I have Verizon FIOS is because my family gets it for free (my dad's a super and has a special deal with Verizon). Other than that, I've pretty much defected to internet for my TV needs, especially since we only get the basic cable box package. When you're a retro TV fan, the premiums just don't deliver enough on that and they're too expensive anyway.

BTW, can someone fill me in on everything Netflix does? I definitely know they do movie rentals through mail and streaming, but from what a lot of people describe it seems they do a lot more than that as if they were also some sort of a la carte cable service. What else do they do that I haven't found out about yet?

I haven't had ANY television service for over a year, cable or broadcast. We do, however, have Netflix instant streaming on our Wii and the "3 DVD's out at a time" package.

I don't miss television at all. I can get my news from the internet, a lot of the stuff we like is on instant, and for the lots of stuff that isn't, we order the DVDs and give 'em the ol' DVDShrink and burn treatment.

I recommend the option I went with, provided you have a good broadband connection.
