This crossed my mind while I was reading the Alice IN Chains thread. I liked AIC back in the day, and I haven't heard the new song yet, so I may be biased, but I'm very worried about what it might sound like.
AIC wouldn't be the first band by FAR to have a new singer though. Most famously is Van Halen, but there are beyond dozens of bands who've elected to replace the singer and carry on under the same name rather than form a new band altogether. I must admit, I kinda like both versions of Van Halen (I don't count Cherone, I never bothered with it) but in other cases it can be a mixed blessing. Journey got a new singer, supposedly who sounds exactly like Steve Perry, yet they are still playing casinos and shit. Judas Priest got more publicity for choosing a new singer than they actually did for their new material. Fuck... all Audioslave was was Rage Against the Machine with Soundgarden's frontman and it was by all accounts pretty terrible.
What do you guys think? List some of the pros and cons, and your favorite/least favorite bands with new guys at the vox.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

Best band with a new singer was AC/DC.
Worst band with a new singer was Nickelback... oh wait... he isn't new, he just sucks.

Let's see, I'm thinking your asking about bands that have replaced the lead singer. If that is the case, lets take a look at a few:
Genesis - Peter Gabriel was the lead singer for these guys from 1967 until the mid-seventies. As soon as he split Phil Collins took over vocal duties and they gained more commercial success. At the same time, Gabriel was developing a pretty good set of chart toppers and has stayed successful to this day, most recently contributing songs to the Disney movie "Wall-E". Genesis (or whats left of them) has now moved onto the mid-west Wal-Mart parking lot concert circuit. (That's not really true, Mike Rutherford was quite successful with Mike and the Mechanics.)
Deep Purple - After Ian Gillan called it quits, they enlisted the help of David Coverdale, later on the lead singer of Whitesnake, and Joe Lynn Turner, frontman for Rainbow. Not much else to say, as most of their stuff is pretty good.
Motley Crue - Vince Neil had a hissy fit in 1992 and stormed off, so for the 1994 self titled album they recruited John Corabi. Even though he could sing alright and play the guitar, no one gave a shit or bought the album. Since 2004, The Crue has gotten back together and been pretty successful. John Corabi now plays with Ratt, probably touring on the same Wal-Mart parking lot circuit as Genesis.

Black Sabbath had Ozzy, but then they went and got Dio, two of the biggest metal legends in the entire world. Same with Helloween who had Kai Hansen, but then had Michael Kiske, two very big guys on the power metal scene.
So, it really depends, some have proven to be just as good or even better.

A few I can think of off the top of my head:
Sepultura: Already sucked by the time Max left, and Greene wasn't much better, though I'll admit I liked him a lot more when I was younger.
Morbid Angel; David Vincent left the band after "Domination", but I haven't heard any stuff with Steve Tucker singing on it.
Corrosion of Conformity: They've had a few changes, but it's safe to say that Pepper Keenan is the best vocalist they could have gotten, even if Karl Agnell doesn't sound that different from him.
Napalm Death: I enjoy Barney's vocals more than any other ND singer I've heard.
Anthrax: Belladonna was best, though John Bush wasn't a bad singer at all. Their tunes with him just weren't too good.
Cannibal Corpse: Doesn't really matter to me, I'll listen to Barnes of Corpsegrinder.
Cryptopsy; Sucked after Worm left.
Exodus: Baloff's vocals were worse than Zetro's, but "Bonded by Blood" as a whole is the best Eodus album.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, and I'm definitely missing some.

Actually, Crue first reunited in 1997 for the Generation Swine album. They appeared on RAW, and one really cared. Except Test. Tommy Lee quit around the turn of the century because his bandmates all though Pamela was a stupid bitch and he took exception to that, so he was replaced by Ozzy drummer Randy Castillo. When Randy's cancer took a turn for the worse, he was replaced on tour by former Hole drummer Samantha Maloney. She fucked Nikki Sixx, Nikki's wife found out, and his marriage ended. Randy eventually succumbed to cancer, and after his death, Tommy Lee rejoined the band. In recent years, Crue has started to be recognized by mainstream critics as a legitimate hard rock band and not just some 80s joke.
As for new singers, fuck new singers. I don't ever want to hear anyone new sing. If you started singing after 1989, quit, cuz I don't wanna hear you; I prefer to listen to Cheap Trick.
I love the new singer for Nightwish, Anette Olzon. I like her way better than Tarja Turunen. I also really think Ailyn is a better fit for Sirenia than Monika Pedersen was.

Gotta disagree strongly on that. Anette isn't bad, but Tarja had to be the best female singer in metal. She blows everyone else out of the water in my book. I generally liked their latest album, but I much preferred their older stuff with Tarja (Oceanborn, Wishmaster, Century Child and Once)

Incorrect. Doro Pesch.
But Tarja was definitely the better Nightwish singer.
Guy has attempted to step into some impossibly huge shoes (Halford, Barlow), but I really like him as a singer.

A lot of new singers are far better than their predecessors; Bruce Dickinson, Corpsegrinder, Brian Johnson (though the Bon Scott era had better songs), and Mike Patton are good examples.

I'd say that Chad Gilbert who was the original singer for Shai Hulud was the best of them (before moving to that "wonderful" pop-punk band New Found Glory). Then again, nobody cares about Shai Hulud.
In just about every case, the original singer is the best not necessarily because of talent, but because the singer becomes part of a band's identity, and that's lost when the singer is changed. That's why so many people are hostile towards new singers in bands.

Before the Crap-tastic emo band Saosin got signed they had Anthony Green as the singer, but he left cuz' he knew they would suck without him, and made Circa Survive, who also kinda suck. Green is one of the many singers in the band The Sound of Animals Fighting, and they do not suck, and Green is awsome in that band.
Saosin still sucks, though.

I always thought the lead singer from Jamiroquai looked like Keanu Reeves. Just sayin'.

AC/DC
personally i think that most of the songs with bon scott as the singer are better than the new songs with brian johnson. but his voice was good enough to continue there legacy

Boston is the only one that really comes to mind, and that was due to the death of Brad Delp , they have filled his spot with Tommy DeCarlo a fan that can really mimic his voice. so far they have only toured with the new guy as far as I know, but it looks like they are planning a new album. I am divided as to whether it is good or bad.

I believe it was Abagail, he sang it better than Diamond imo.
