I'm a bit behind in the tech scene right now as I only have a PS2, althought I did own an Xbox 360 at one point. It's not a problem because I have always liked the PS2 and it has a few of my all-time favorite games on it. I won't be buying a new system until all the next gen consoles are launched so I can see which would be the best fit for me. So until then I'll only have my PS2, and I was hoping I could get some suggestions on what you consider to be the best games for it. I have searched online bust most lists contain the same games and I was hoping maybe there were some good ones that weren't so popular or maybe didn't get as much attention as they should have. I figured I would ask those of you on this forum since I got such good advice on the anime thread.
The games I own and play the most are Gran Turismo 4, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Shadow Of The Colossus, Resident Evil 4, God Of War 1 & 2, and Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsonal. I enjoy playing a variety of genres, and RPG's are among my favorite althought I don't own any right now, and I haven't bought any because I was wanting to avoid anything with excesssive level grinding if at all possible, but I could deal with it if the game is good and it's worth the effort.
Feel free to discuss anything PS2 related, I was just hoping to get some good ideas on what to buy in the process. Also, I am going through JJGames online to buy whatever used games they have, if anyone knows a better place or have had a bad experience with them please let me know.

Do you know who developed those by chance? I've heard about them but wasn't sure if they were Square games.

Atlus made them. They are spin off games of the Shin Megami Tensei series. You should try them, i played them a lot. I would go into more detail of i wouldnt use my cellphone to write this post.

Sounds awesome, I like a few of the older games by Atlus, but I haven't played anything by them in awhile. If you don't mind throw in a few details when you get the chance, because I had just been thinking about which Final Fantasy game to get until now.
I have to use my phone for anything internet related and trying to get good service here where I live can be such a pain.

So on Persona 3 and 4:
Both games are roughly described as Dungeon-CrawlerRPG's mixed with a Real Life Simulation game wrapped into a unique and charming anime-esque gaming world. You alternate between visiting school, learning and writing test, making friends etc (basically between the core elements of an teenagers life) and fighting monsters inside dungeons. Everything you do has a purpose. For instance learning for a test boosts your intelligence wich you need for making friends or getting a certain job. This gives the game a nearly unmatched complexity and anybody who seriously wants to complete it plays it with an FAQ for assistance. This is optional and just necessary if you don't wanna miss anything out. As stated before the games have decent characters and very intersting visual aspects. The storys are also okay, though nothing that special. Overall Persona offers a very unique gaming experience. It's one of those games that draws you in.

Sounds great and unlike anything I've ever played which is highly intriguing. I've played a lot of rpg's but never anything remotely like that. Hope like hell JJGames has it in stock! Thanks for relaying that info, I shall use it wisely.
Now to go look at that sweet ass thread, thanks Valdronius.

One other thing about the Persona games, and even its parent series Shin Megami Tensei, is that they have multiple endings. P4 (the only one I've played) had a Good, Bad, and True Ending (with P4 Gold having an extra Really Bad ending).

I can't speak for Persona, but the Atlus games I've played (Persona 4 Arena, Catherine, Devil Survivor Overclocked) all rank among the best story telling I've ever experienced in video games.

Then you're really missing out. In my opinion, 3 had the superior story, but there's a slight majority for 4 for some reason.

I refuse to think of the P3 and P4 storylines as great or something. They do their job but not much more. It's a basic videogame plot with the "Harmless opening scenario leading to main character finding his true fate leading him to fight evil monsters to, oh how very original, to save the world".
And anybody who thinks that works as an mentionable plot can go fuck himself.

As someone who grew up speaking English as my first language, and as someone who has a strong appreciation for language and word choice, I can say with full confidence that the English localizations of the Atlus games I have played are phenomenal. It's not necessarily that the stories are amazingly groundbreaking or amazingly unique, it's HOW they tell their stories. The dialogue is well-written, and there is a TON of characterization. Being the first person to have an idea isn't as important as having the best execution of that idea. And Atlus falls into that second camp.
Your results may vary.

It is the most stock RPG plot ever, wich got retold from FF 1 to Diablo 3.
I see that Persona makes it a little better than some other games still it's cliche.
The game succeeds in other areas, so i dont mind it anyway.
I just think it's fanboy gibberish to point out how great the Persona storys are.

Great topic, even if it's a rehash from 2012.
The original reason I bought a PS2 was for the game Crazy Taxi. I loved the soundtrack. While it's not one of my favorites, it was the original reason I bought a used system.
I soon discovered that there are a multitude of great games on the PS2. Some of my favorites include:
- Destroy All Humans
- Mercenaries
- GTA: San Andreas
- Star Wars: Battlefront
- Star Wars Force Unleashed
- Lego Star Wars (both I and II)
I didn't play a lot of the PS2 classic titles (or franchises) until after that had been ported to the PS3 or Gamecube (Prince of Persia, Resident Evil, God of War, and Final Fantasy). I need to begin aquiring some of the classics for my PS2 library.

The fact that Persona has brought on such a discussion has me even more interested in playing it. I think if it's available I'm going to buy both 3 and 4.
I remember first playing Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast, and I thought it was amazing to be hearing music from The Offspring on a video game.
I actually owned Destroy All Humans some years ago and loved it even though it was critically disappointing.

Breath of Fire 5 is also a hidden RPG gem on the PS2. You should also check out Zone of the Enders 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2. Both exceptional video games.

Well, I couldn't get either of the Persona games because they are much more expensive, even used they are high. I wanted Okami but it was also just a bit too expensive for me right now. I feel like I took a gamble, but I went with Final Fantasy X. I've never played it but remember when it was all the rave and was hoping to be able to capture some of that excitement. Have any of you played it?
Is Breath of Fire 5 the one that went in the steampunk direction? I've played and beaten MGS2 awhile back, great game for sure. Actually, I own and have beaten MGS3 twice, and was wondering if the Subsistence version of the game has anything to offer that would make it seem fresh, any idea?

Damn! I never imagined it would be cheaper on Amazon. The cheapest one was priced at almost $12 but s&h is $8, but even then it's cheaper then the ones I seen. I didn't want to spend more than $20 so I look at used games on a couple different websites, and JJGames had some great deals so I assumed I wouldn't find better deals anywhere else. Wish I hadn't already made my purchase now but guess I'll make the most of it and check out Amazon next time.
The two main websites I searched were www.jjgames.com and www.videogamecentral.com.
