Just played Faxanadu for the first time. It's wierd that I never played it before considering I've had my NES for over 20 years, and having enjoyed very similar games like Battle of Olympus and Zelda II. It would probably make my list except I've barely gotten very far into it. Good game though.
Tough choices here
10. Battle of Olympus
9. Castlevania III
8. Mega Man 2
7. Mega Man 3
6. Mega Man 4
5. Final Fantasy
4. Blaster Master
3. Legend of Zelda
2. Crystalis
1. Destiny of an Emperor
Games that almost made the list, Ultima: Avatar, Strider, Bionic Commando, Zelda II, Castlevania 1 & 2, Startropics, Mega Man, Super Mario 3. Yes I know it may seem wierd that I don't regard Super Mario 3 as the best NES game ever but for me it just isn't.

Do you mean of all time, or for us personally?

Well considering everyone has different tastes, there's not much point in saying 'best of all time', otherwise it would just be another argument thread. Since there's a lot of great games I haven't had a chance to play, I couldn't very well do an all time best anyway. So I guess it would be your personal top ten.

A long time ago I created this little mini-site about something like this:
http://www.squidoo.com/best-nintendogames-ever
My Top 10 would resemble it still. Can't really rank them though.
River City Ransom
The Legend of Zelda
Ninja Gaiden
Mega Man 2
Blaster Master
Double Dragon 2
Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest
Contra
Super Mario Brothers 3
Tetris
EDIT: I put 1 game per franchise. So, Honorable Mentions outside of these 10 would be:
Zelda 2
Ninja Gaiden 2
Mega Man 3
Double Dragon
Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse
Super Mario Brothers 2
There's enough good to great franchises to only allow 1, in my opinion, in a top 10 list.

Ooh, Lolo III. That's a nice pick. I forgot about that. I wish they'd release a new Lolo for DSiWare or WiiWare.

Your entire post is called into question with this selection. There is nothing fun about that game. Nothing at all. It's not even like crappy fun, it's just crappy. That game is crap. Poop even. The game is poop in a nintendo cartridge, actually it's not even in an official Nintendo Cartridge, it's in one of those ugly hard to remove Tengen cases, thus making the game even WORSE! /rant
p.s. FUCK that game.

Despite my love for the NES system, I actually don't have experience with a wide variety of games. I only had a handful of them growing up, and I never used an emulator before last year's NES Challenge on this site. Since that ended, the only time I used it was to do a leg of the Super Mario 2 collab.
With that disclaimer, you'll understand why my personal Top 10 probably looks retarded to many of you since I obviously only included games I've actually played a lot. Some of them got high ratings because of the fun times I had playing multiplayer with my brother or friends--the game itself may not be that great.
10. Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt
9. R.C. Pro Am
8. North and South
7. Caveman Games
6. Super Mario Bros. 2
5. Metroid
4. Contra
3. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
2. Shingen the Ruler

The specification technically shouldn't be needed. When talking about the NES, if you mention Super Mario 2, it's implied you mean the US version, because the Japanese version wasn't released for the Famicom/NES, but for the Famicom's disk peripheral. Still, it's always good to err on the side of clarity.

That's about how I feel. I love a handful of NES games dearly, but it was the SNES that I grew up with. Specifically, my parents started a video store in 1995 (I was 7 at the time) and I had access to all the SNES games my young heart desired. The NES had pretty much run its lifespan out, so I had most of those games mentioned in a collection, but that was about it.

Excellent point. I agree on removing all doubt just to be on the safe side, but I hadn't considered what you mentioned when I posted.

I love Mega Man 3, however, Mega Man 2 feels vastly superior.
Maybe it's because its harder. Quick Man, Heat Man's stage, Wily 1-2 music. The rematches with the bosses. Hard to top.
Mega Man 3 is memorable too. Snake Man, Magnet Man, but overall, it's just not as good to me. I love both games, but I play Mega Man 2 more than Mega Man 3.
