Guys, this just ushers in the birth of the Neo-Tokyo seen in so many animes! Now they're going to build giant dome cities and robots and develop psychic child-gods!

Seriously, that sucks Japan is definitely in my top five favorites countries. They make Transformers man!

I hope Nintendo, Sega, HAL Labs, Gamefreak, Capcom, Konami, Nihon Falcom, SNK, NEC, Sony, Cave, Treasure, Arika, Square Enix, and every other Japanese video game company that I haven't listed are alright.

I find it all really fascinating.

As some of you may know i'm a student and study Geography/Earth Science so i know tsunamis and earthquakes like the back of my hand.

Anyone here who goes fishing or boating will know the effects of the moon on the earth both centrifugal and gravitional forces.

These forces determine how tidal currents move around the earth or upwelling of water. With such a larger force in place with this supermoon this effect on tide with exacerbated.

Of course you all know since you get them in the US that earthquakes are formed by plates moving part, sliding past each other or moving together.

I'd imagine that the plates in the ocean around Japan are convergent plate boundaries i.e. two plates are pushing together and one is submerged - oceanic vs continental plates.

Large forces obviously cause large waves and the combination of the moons effect causing a swelling of tide probably on the eastern side of Japan is most likely what is responsible for the tsunami which occurred.

If there was no supermoon this wouldn't have been as devastating.

As for the whirlpool i'm not sure, i am sure ekman spiral/coriollis force and different forms of wave motion on the surface, below the surface as turbulent flow and on the bed as laminar have something to do with it? They are at least formed by fast flowing water.

In the future this will definitely be studied and if you look at tidal data i'd imagine that in the areas around Japan and to the north, west and south there would have been a drop in tidal height due to the movement of water towards the east.

Just putting it all into context for you :p

Was very happy to read the headline "All US Military Personnel Accounted for in Japan."

With that said, my thoughts and prayers go out to the people.

I already know multiple Navy Ships are deploying with Helicopters and Supplies to lend a hand.

Knowing the Japanese, they've probably managed to release Cthulu or something.

Okay but in all dead seriousness, this is a tragedy. 6.0 earthquakes are NASTY and scare the shit out of me. I can't even imagine riding out a 9. Jesus. Get better soon, guys. Sad Time to roll out the donation train again.

Also, hooray for being inland...they say my neighborhood's about to get tsunami'd in the next hour or two. I KNEW there was a reason I hate the beach.

It's no big deal when it happens to a useless country like Haiti, but Japan? A lot of good shit comes from Japan. I'll support their rebuilding efforts by buying a 3DS.

This is really unsettling. My sister in law is Japanese and thankfully her family is okay but these images that I've seen are horrifying.

This guy predicted it, kinda: http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message1370536/pg1

Warning about that forum, it is perhaps the most schizophrenic area of the internet, even more than here. Still, the timestamp does not lie.

Well, if it were to happen to anyway, the Japanese are probably the best prepared for this sort of thing. What's interesting is the earthquake actually did very little damage and it was the gigantic wave from hell that's destroyed everything.

It was pretty surreal watching the wave coming on land, demolishing homes and buildings, and just keep going. And going, and going. Pretty crazy stuff seeing people try to outrun it in their car as a huge fishig boat passes by in front of them on the highway.

Five of their nuclear plants are failing, and one is almost in meltdown. I don't think it's joke time yet.

Because 70 years of lasting radiation effects wasn't enough karma for bombing a single military installation.
