From Kotaku.com:
Those aren't two interpretations of the same piece of news; if Game Informer are to be believed, then two fighting games are currently in development, both pitting the stars of Namco against the stars of Capcom.
Note these are fighting games, not a continuation of the old Namco x Cappcom RPG title that appeared on the previous hardware generation. Why two games? Simple: each company makes one! Capcom would be developing Capcom vs Namco, built on the Street Fighter IV engine, while Namco will develop Namco vs Capcom, which will run on the Tekken 6 engine.
As fighting game fans are already no doubt coming to grips with, this would mean two significantly different games, Street Fighter IV's 2D arenas contrasted nicely with Tekken's more three-dimensional combat.
GI say that Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono is handling Capcom's side of the deal, while it's expected Namco Bandai's Katsuhiro Harada will be in charge of the opposing project.
If this information is good - and there have certainly been strong hints to suggest it is - then the two games' debut trailers will be shown this weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Wow, this is VERY interesting. What a novel concept, I feel that the Namco one is going to be great, lots of Soul Calibur characters I hope....and Pacman!
Also, I hope the Capcom version is more over the top than SFIV, keeping in mind that it is in fact a Vs. title.

Meh, Namco these days is just Pac-Man in limbo and two fighting games that haven't been anywhere near their best in over seven or so years with one completely sucking ass. Which isn't good at all if Namco is indeed developing one of their own.
I'm still waiting for that Capcom Vs. Konami game god dammit, you can stop teasing with the Boktai cameos in Mega Man BN and SF.

I think overall, the Soul Calibur series great. In general it is well-balanced and plays great, also they are more than capable of handling characters outside of their franchise. I thought Link was awesome in SC2.

LAME. Capcom's should run on the CvT or MvC3 engine. I don't want to see Tekken characters all roided out.
Also let's not get excited. This is gonna be SSF4 vs. Tekken 6 and Tekken 6 vs. SSF4. Nothing more.
I want to a new engine, one that allows roster diversity.

As usual, I will reserve judgment until I see some gameplay. The concept still kinda intrigues me, but yea I agree, I want it to run on a "vs" engine and not the SSF4 engine.

Isn'tt he only game we have seen with the SF4 engine .....SF4? I mean I could be wrong but we don't the engine can really do. Also even if they change the engine the characters will likely still be modeled after the most recent versions so it would still be sf4 vs tekken 6.

I guess it sounds like a neat idea but I can't get too excited since I don't give two shits about any Namco properties. I'd have zero attachment to their side.

Well Opti, yes. But when a game uses the same engine and characters as a previous game, the obvious assumption is that those characters will look and play like they did in the previous game on that engine.
And in SF4, there are two distinct character designs for each character. There are the cool ones in the cutscenes and the goofy ones you actually play as.
Maybe the games will surprise me. Wouldn't be hard, since I have zero enthusiasm for them right now. But if there are no Soulcalibur characters, fuck these games. Fuck them hard.

Granted, making a video game is much more work than a comic book, but I'm seriously surprised this kind of thing hasn't been done more often.
I have to agree, Syd. The fact that they are using S4's engine and not their more universal MT Framework engine, suggests that Capcom is going to use their already created sf4 character models. I don't mind though, SF4 has style.

Don't get me wrong, I love SF4 and SSF4 for what they are. But SF4 + Tekken characters doesn't sound fun to me. Neither does Tekken 6 + Street Fighter characters. I want something with more balance.

I'd think a Virtua Fighter vs Tekken game would make more sense. SF and Tekken are wildly different styles of fighting game and would require some drastic changes or a whole new engine to make a worthwhile game.

Yeah, Tekken is about 10 strings, whereas SF is about corner combos and spamming projectiles.
Imagine Eddy vs. Ryu. Unless Eddy gets a ridiculous speed adjustment to compensate, there's no way he can win that match.

While soul calibur has been in a constant decline, tekken is at it's best with 6.
How will they it these characters into each others games?
Street fighters are primarily about controlling space, whille tekken guys are about counter pokes and juggles.
Are going to see drastic changes to movesets?

Soulcalibur has not been in constant decline. It may currently be in decline, but that's debatable.
The following is generally accepted:
Soulcalibur II > Soulcalibur > Soul Blade > Soul Edge
Soulcalibur III < Soulcalibur II
Was Soulcalibur IV better than III? Yes. Was it better than II? Debatable. But the series was in ascension up through SC2, so "constant decline" is not a fair assessment.
Also, Tekken 6 is not the best in the series. Aside from Alissa Boskonovitch, the new characters are all shit. And Tekken 6 had the lamest, cheapest end boss ever. The optional boss guy sucked too.

How about releasing Boktai 5 and providing closure to the huge cliffhanger that ended Boktai 4?
Capcom's the king of unresolved cliffhangers (ZX, DASH) and Konami should know better than to follow that trend

Every soul calibur game after the second one was sub par at best.
Despite the bosses, everything else about tekken 6 was an improvement over 5, and considering 5 was the only one really worth my time in the series, I'd have to say that 6 is the best.
The other character that you played as in scenario campaign mode was a lot of fun, even if his plot was lame. Same with bob. Dragunov and lilli are also phenomenal. I know they technically came about in dark resurrection, but they were really fleshed out in 6 as more than bonus content.

You know, Soul Calibur IV would actually work better with SF4, since they added in Critical Finishes or whatever.
