Jay Leno is going back to his 11:30 PM time slot, and it's looking like Conan O'Brien is the odd man out ... sources tell TMZ. We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien. |
If this is true and ends up happening, this really sucks. Conan O' Brian is the funniest late night show there is, and he is a hundred times better than Jay Leno.

I don't think they'd do that to Conan.

Cutting Conan? Not likely, unless they have a contract with the SNL reject.

I prefer Jay Leno anyways. Conan stopped being funny like 8 years ago.

The decision to give Conan the Tonight Show was idiotic. Leno was still bringing in big ratings in that time slot, and Conan has failed to recapture them. Leno's 10 PM show simply can't compete against the 10 PM dramas that other networks offer. It could - and did - destroy Letterman though. You wanna talk about unfunny? Fucking Letterman.
The truth is, Conan and Leno both have followings, and those following are lost in the new time slots. Conan simply isn't 11:30 material.

I think Leno is one of the better interviewers in late night but his skits are fucking abysmally unfunny.

The skits are fairly terrible, but Jaywalking and Headlines usually make me laugh.

Conan's self deprecating attitude worked when he was a poor comedian with little ratings. Now it just makes him look like a jackass.

I don't understand the connection with being self deprecation and being a jackass.

I agree. I also think Leno probably appeals to more people while Conan is kind of an acquired taste. I think he is really funny. But I also don't think his humor is for everyone.

It's funny because a lot of people I know feel Conan is for younger people, but my dad who's 60 years old laughs his ass off at Conan and barely ever chuckled at Leno.

They had to give Conan the Tonight Show spot to keep him. They promised it to him a while back to keep him at his old time slot, and they thought Leno would have retired by now. WRONG.
And since they didn't want to lose Leno to another network, they had to do something to keep him.
It was really the only move they could make. Leno or O'Brien jumping ship to another network would have been disastrous, particularly since you're right, Letterman is unfunny as hell (and even worse, irrelevant), and I'm sure either one would make a great replacement for him.

I loved Late Night with Conan, Tonight Show with Conan hasn't been anywhere near as funny. Leno was okay, but Headlines was great.(were great? is great?) Ihope they do something where Conan returns to a later timeslot, even if he changes network. I've even liked Ferguson and Kimmel more than current Conan, and that's saying something.

Why don't they just alternate? Conan on M-W-F and Leno on T, R.
Sounds stupid, but I think it could possibly work.

NBC has given Conan O'Brien the option to either do his show from midnight to 1 or leave the network, sources tell TMZ.
As TMZ first reported, after the Olympics, Jay Leno will get his 11:30 PM time period back. We're told network execs have told Conan they will let him decide if he wants the midnight to 1:00 AM time slot. If he does, Leno's show will only be a half hour. If Conan walks, Leno will get a full hour, informed sources tell TMZ.
Our sources say Conan has not decided what he wants. We do know he's pissed, because he was given no advanced warning this was coming. Conan's people told NBC they are considering the offer. Translation: Mr. O'Brien -- I have Rupert Murdoch on line one, Stephen McPherson on line two, John Landgraf on line three, Jeff Wachtel on line four ...
We're told if Conan gets another offer, even though NBC could block the move, they will let him go and give Leno the full hour. |
At least they are giving him an option and he has the opportunity for an hour long show still. I wouldn't blame him one bit for walking away. I'd be royally pissed off if I were him. If you click the link I provided, the story under it is about how Fox may be interested in him and be willing to bring him in for an 11:00 PM time slot, this is the option I would love to see him take. Go to Fox and bring in better ratings than Leno or Letterman. Regardless of what happened, if he does end up going to Fox, it should be interesting.

That sounds like one of those perfectly reasonable solutions that would never work because of logistical reasons or something.

I actually hope Conan does leave now...why should he be fucked over? Leno CHOSE to step down to begin with, even if NBC did pressure him, he made the final decision to do so. This is the second time that he's fucked someone out of their position for the Tonight Show, so fuck NBC and fuck Leno...when he finally does decide to step down or hand the reigns over to someone, good luck finding someone who can fill the void better than someone like Conan since NBC seems to have a hard-on for people who absolutely suck at their jobs like Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daily.
