Chris Farley stars in a DirecTV ad from one of his classic films "Tommy Boy" with pal David Spade. Is it too soon seems to be the constant topic of discussion and many say Spade is cashing in on his dead buddy.
The scene from the film is one of the classics and if you have seen the entire film it is impossible not to chuckle at “fat guy in a little coat.”
E! Online quotes Spade as the actor had to defend himself over the charges he is cashing in on his friend and comedic partner. For the record, Farley passed away one week before Christmas almost twelve years ago on December 18, 1997.
"When DirecTV came to me and the Farley family with this idea about Tommy Boy, we talked and thought it would be a cool way to remind people just how funny Chris was," Spade tells Asylum via his publicist. "It is a clever homage to my friend and a movie that we loved doing."
TV Squad calls it a “Worst commercial of the year nominee” and muses that it isn’t funny, clever or original.

Bring back the boy in the balloon. Jesus, people need to chill the fuck out. I was the biggest fan of Chris Farley and was actually devestated by his death. I think I still have his Death from the paper when it happened.
I could see if the Farley family wasn't included/left out, but the fact that Direct TV came to Spade and the Farleys seems perfectly fine. Trying to say Spade is trying to capitalize on his dead friend is fucking retarded.

It's somewhere between Fred Astaire dancing with a vacuum cleaner and John Wayne drinking Coors.

It's good to remember him, and his comedy. I'm just not a big fan of marketing like this, but there really is no other way to do something like this and get it seen. People get so upset about anything anymore it's embarrassing.

I think the entire DirecTV campaign with redubbed scenes from famous movies is fucking shameful. David Spade is no more or less shameful than any of the other idiots who have done these commercials.
Also, where was the outrage when they did the Poltergeist commercial where they used footage of that poor little girl who died? And she died of a tragic illness that could have been treated, had it been diagnosed.
None of that is as bad as that motherfucking commercial of Gene Kelly dancing with a goddamn vacuum cleaner. THAT was heresy.

How was that supposed to be offensive?
Yeah, the Gene Kelly thing was fucking ridiculous, as was Orville Redenbacher cooking pop corn while listening to an Ipod.

There was one, minor as it was because her parents signed off on it.

Nelson, intended to mimic the film. After the advertisement drew criticism from bloggers and columnists for exploiting O'Rourke,[23] DirecTV responded in a Q&A session with readers of The New York Times. Jon Gieselman, its senior vice president for advertising and public relations, explained that O'Rourke's family "was involved in the spot from start to finish [and that] Heather’s mother not only approved, [...] she also commented that Heather’s inclusion was a wonderful tribute to her daughter."[24]

I can't wait until they contact Jim Cavezial who starts telling people it's sinful to not watch His passion in Direct TV HD.

For the next commercial I hope they use the scene in The Crow that Brandon Lee was shot filming. Maybe he could say something along the lines of "Man, if I had cable instead of Direct TV, I'd shoot myself!"

Let's take this to the next logical step: Use footage of Budd Dwyer's suicide, and have him say "If I hadn't gotten caught, I would be at home watching my DirecTV." *BLAM*
Seriously, though? Grow up, pussies. There was approval. David Spade is hardly relevant anymore; who can blame him for selling out and reminding people of his better days.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

The commercials don't make the dead speak, just their co-stars. I want to see more creativity people.

Yeah, I make tons of comments that are absolute gold and yet I get nothing back for them. I'm definately the most underrated forum member here. Thanks for being a fan though.
