As much as I hate to admit it, the stereotypes about modern rap are pretty dead-on in the sense that a vast majority of them are drum machine beats with music stolen music behind some guy doing poetry about how awesome he is. It's worse because The Beastie Boys and Run DMC at least had some energy and fun when they did it. Nowadays, the 50 Cent-style mumbling is the king, and it just sounds like someone with palsy placed in a recording room.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

A bunch of video game nerds on an 80's nostalgia website talking smcak about a faction of street culture of the black community gives me images of the Bloods and the Crips sitting down at a round table talking about how shitty Final Fantasy III (or 6) is. Very Happy

This pretty much sums up the way I feel about mainstream rap these days. Track is called "Pray For Me" by Reks, dope emcee out of Boston...

@bomberman: you dislike people who say "hip-hop" is dead", yet you like soulja boy? funny, because rappers like him are exactly the reason why people are saying it...

and @scamrock, being a former death row fan, are you familiar at all with Crooked I?

No, I'm not. I know he was a member of Death Row. But that's all I know. I wasn't really listening to their stuff at the time. I'll check him out to see if he is any good. I usually don't like a lot of the guys from Death Row after Interscope broke ties with them. I especially don't like that fake ass Tupac wannabe Tha Realest. I like how he tought it'd be a good idea to rip into Eminem. Dumbass.

Yea, he was on death row for about 4 years, and while he recorded at least 2 full albums, they were never released because of problems within the label (ie Suge always being locked up). Anyway, he's my favorite rapper as my alias might suggest. Here's a pretty cool sample track to check out:

This was the finale to a 52 week series he did starting last year and ending just a few weeks ago called "Hip Hop Weekly". Every week he put out a "freestyle" track over someone else's beat, usually rocking it better than the original artist themselves, and put it out on the internet for a free download. The finale is a 10 minute track where he raps over a medley of tracks by deceased rappers as a tribute. This includes many classic instrumentals from the likes of 2Pac, Eazy E, Notorious B.I.G., Big Pun, Big L, J. Dilla, Jam Master Jay and even Nirvana. If you like what you hear, you can download the rest of the tracks in this series for free from his website:

http://dynastyentgroup.com/site/hip-hop-weekly/

Also, most of them can be found on youtube as well, if you don't want to download the tracks to your hard drive. Let me know what you think...

The only kind of music I cannot listen to.

How can talking to a beat be music? Where's the singing?

I always viewd it as a modern form of poetry or storytelling providing that the story being told gives me intersting visualzations ti imagine, IE Brotha Lynch Hung tells some crazy stories in his rap and it makes for a cool imagining for me, Soulja Boy telling you to crank it and "superman that ho" however, does not. Confused

Rap is just like any other genre of music 99% is shit and the other 1% is good. All the people that criticize it usually hear whats on the radio because its not their main interest, so they don't bother looking for maybe the lesser known good stuff. It's definately not my favorite genre, but there is some good stuff out there. Also, I hate it when people say its not music because they aren't singing. It still has a rhythm and melody, and I gurantee we all like a song or two where the singer isn't exactly "singing". I know tons of music I like isn't textbook singing, or at least i wouldn't know how to transcribe the lyrics to a score. It's the same as somebody saying they don't like metal because all they've heard is nickleback and linkin park.

Agreed except people calling Nickelback and Linkin Park Metal, that's just a bit odd.

Maybe that was a bit extreme, but you get the idea... But I have heard linkin park called metal by folks around her sadly.[/quote]

I can see how someone could call Linkin Park metal, but Nickelback? Puh-leeze.

Though a friend of mine did perfectly describe them when she said they were a non-metal Pantera for fags.

I'm very selective in my rap choices and consider most (hell, probably all) mainstream rap to be ridiculous bullshit that people must be brain damaged to listen to.

i would say most of it is annoying BS that gets away from the original reason hip-hop was invented (revolution etc etc) but some of the new stuff is inventive and very fun to listen to (gnarls barkley + strange fruit project for example)

No, I love Gnarls Barkley, I guess they are a bit more mainstream than I think (I never listen to the radio) And god I love "Crazy" too. Their new album is really slick too, though I kinda feel both albums start out real catchy and then kinda loose steam towards the end, both still good though. I also really like MF DOOM (and his various other personas) and obviously DangerDoom as well. Del Tha Funky Homosapien is good too.

Mainstream rap / hiphop / R&B always tricks me into listening to it, I turn the radio on and start listening to it and about a quarter of the way into the song I look at the radio slap my forehead ala "i could have had a V8", exclaim 'waitaminit, this sucks!" and change the station. Sad

Danger Doom was sick. I'm a big fan of Danger Mouse and his various projects (even the non hip-hop stuff like Pelican City and The Good The Bad and The Queen), he can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.

I think that to say rap is horrible, or to say that all of it is of the highest quality are both fallacies. Both new and old, there as been some shit forced upon us on all genres of music. Right now, similiar to the revival of classic metal groups in the late 90's, early 00's, there is a resurgence of great older hip hop acts. There is new Wu-Tang, new KRSONE, new DasEFX, Busta Rhymes has gone back to his older style on his new tracks, and the list continues. Also, I would say that if you are into backpack, indie, or neo soul, then you will find some exceptional music. Granted, even a music junkie like me, loving all genres, gets sick of rappers only talking about there rims, jewelry, houses, and so on. Hell, Bone Thugs dropped a new album last year. And as already mentioned, Dangermouse, Gnarls Barkley, MF Doom, and shit CeeLo's collaborations with both as well as Nas. In the end, in almost any genre if you want great music, it's out there, you just may have to look a bit harder then your local records store, radio station, or MTV.
