A friend and I played through Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World The Game a few weeks ago. Very neat, the length is a bit short but the combo possibilities are enjoyable.

Are you talking about the final story boss or the ultimate hidden boss? Both are beatable with some patience and a ton of Ginsengs, but watching this video reminds me of how tough it is to be evasive in that game, especially when so much has happening onscreen at once.

I'm talking about the ultimate hidden boss. Even with full ginsengs and repeatedly pressing the pause button to slow things down, I still haven't beaten him. It's like you said, dodging is so wonky and hard in this game because of the way you ascend and descend that it's hard to not get railed by him literally every five seconds. Do you know if any of the spells help at all? I tried some but none seemed to really do much. At any rate, though, I did really freaking love the game. I'd heard it was an adventure game but I hadn't known it was a near-flawless Metroidvania.
Also, the Scott Pilgrim game is fantastic. I remember when I invited three of my friends over to play it together, one of the best nights of my life.

I stopped playing after trying to beat the ultimate boss a couple of times. He is really a pain in the ass, doable though.

I remember swapping between Armor and Fang/Hand talismans throughout the fight. When he's in the locked position form, go for damage since he's an easier target. When he's in the mobile form, go for defense and evasion. I don't think I've ever used spells in that game, so I couldn't say if any are beneficial.
Honestly, if you mind the talismans, a large amount of the remainder is luck. Keep trying and you'll get it.

That game's awesome, but the PC version is even better, with different missions & more options (not to mention better graphics). Try it out. There was even a sequel for it.

I'll definitely have to check it out. I liked being able to explore a bunch of other planets in the NES game (even if the vast majority of them were empty), and it looks like the PC version has more of that.

I just beat Super Mario Brothers Wii with my four year old son. We didn't get every star coin, and he spent a lot of time in a bubble, but he liked the ghost houses. He liked getting the flowers and different suits, so I spent most of the game as regular 'ol Luigi.
By the way, that propeller suit sucks so much ass.

Although I've already played through normal mode a few times, I recently completed Hector's Hard Mode in Fire Emblem (Game Boy Advance).
Some random notes about my playthrough, you can safely skip this if you've never played the game (and if you haven't, you are doing yourself a disservice). Otherwise my ramblings may interest you.
[SPOILER:49570864a7]The crew: Hector, Kent, Lucius, Oswin, Guy, Priscilla, Nils/Ninian, Raven, Merlinus. Other random characters used as necessary. Game completed with no deceased characters (if someone died, I restarted the chapter).
Lyn's mode is basically unchanged, even on Hard difficulty. I only wanted to use Kent and Lucius for the later stages, so I focused training those two. Kent experience-sponged this part of the game, reached level 20, and I used Wallace's Knight Crest on him before defeating Lundgren. Pretty neat.
Hector's Hard mode forces you to be ridiculously ballsy in the beginning, as the game sends wave after wave of enemies at you without much room for error. Furthermore, you are significantly limited on available units in comparison to Normal mode, so trying to both defend your team as well as run across the map to open chests can be pretty punishing. Double-attacking anyone for the first few chapters is pretty rare.
I feel that most games on Hard difficulty get easier as you reach the halfway point and obtain more combat options, and Fire Emblem is no exception. Namely, when I obtained Guy and Raven (who arrive as enemies and must be recruited), their Hard mode stats are greater than their Normal mode stats because of the game's enemy-leveling mechanics. Guy, Priscilla, Nils/Ninian and Merlinus have ridiculously high Speed and Luck stats, so they can typically be placed in the middle of a map to safely aggravate enemies.
The only genuinely frustrating moments I came across were certain maps where the enemy team is loaded with mages using long-range status condition staves. Unless I missed a secret shop opportunity, for the majority of the game you only get one Restore staff to fix status conditions, which is not much help when you're being spammed with a wave of Sleep, Silence and Berserk staves each round. Some of these levels literally came down to hoping the enemy missed, as the team's resources are too strained to prepare much of a safeguard.
I gave Guy a few stat-boosting items, but his level-ups were extremely bountiful. He maxed out HP, Strength, Skill, and Speed on his own, had high Luck, and nearly capped Defense and Resistance. If something had to die, just use Guy.
Oppositely, this playthrough resulted in my worst Lucius ever. He normally had no problem maxing Magic, Speed, Skill, and Resistance in my previous playthroughs. This time around, he barely capped Magic, even after I gave him Afa's Drops (which adds 5% to all of his stat growths). However, this is all that's really needed for him to be an efficient healer, so I cannot really deem Lucius's performance as detrimental.
I wanted to use Canas, as his dark tomes are extremely versatile, but by the time he arrived my current team was filling up the available slots, so Canas was benched this playthrough. I held onto a Luna tome for Athos during the last chapter, though. 'Cause hey, Luna is broken as hell in this game.
I derped hardcore during my first fight with the Dragon - I parked Priscilla within its attack range while she was holding a Bolting tome (a very heavy weapon), so she was instantly doubled. I think that's the first time I've made that mistake, but at least it was pretty humorous to be one round from winning the game and suddenly, oops.
[/SPOILER:49570864a7]
I'm going to try out Sacred Stones on Hard mode next. I believe the experience will come down to how much I abuse monster grinding, since the Tower of Valni is an early option to level up units and overthrow story mode balance. Guess I'll try to avoid it for as long as possible to make a truly difficult experience.

I beat Final Fantasy Legend 1 with a single character; human. Pumping your AGI and STR stats for high damage and evade was simple. It was the lack of defense against magic and status effects that were the bane of completing this challenge. Beat it though. Restrictions on Agility and Strong potions would make it harder.

My friends and I played that game when it came out, together. Four of us in total. I remember one of them turning to the rest of us at one point and saying, "Why can't life be like this? Why can't we just go beat up ninjas together when we need money?"
God, what a blast...I love that game.

• Picross DS (all of it, even the downloaded puzzles...there are now three circular scratch marks in the upper left of my screen >_<)
• Dark Void Zero on hard difficulty
• Portal 2
• Pokemon Silver & Pokemon Ruby; played them on an emulator in fast forward, which is the only way to play. Pokemon games move so damned slowly. Went with my traditional, overpowered Fire + Psychic team.
then I got the legendaries
and
• Saint's Row: The Third; the first game in a while that really grabbed my attention and held it. It was the only thing I played for over week and I 100%-ed it. My first, and probably only, platinum trophy achievement. I just wish there were more clothing choices and more ways to interact with the game world. More core-story missions wouldn't hurt, either.

I recently beat Final Fantasy V under the following variant: you can only use character classes which are available at the beginning of the original Final Fantasy. This includes, from FFV, Knight, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage, Monk, and Thief. You are only allowed to use those classes and the default class, and only one class other than default per character. The allowance of the default class added mostly to the fun factor, allowing you to, for example, gain LVL3 white magic ability, then turn that character into a default with that ability so that they can use the latest white magic spells, but also use a whip or the katana that you get at Tycoon Castle. I also beat the game during this variant at character levels of 31 (Lenna was 30 due to time missed in the Pyramid). During the final battle with Exdeath, my highest HP character was Bartz, who had the knight job. His HP was 1386, I believe, Faris had 1050, and Lenna and Cara had HP below 1000. This was a very tense fight and very fun. I've not had this much fun since playing the Atma Weapon boss at the Floating Continent of FFVI with a Celes, Edgar and Setzer no magicite party. Items are a HUGE help. Best spells in FFV: Cure 3, Life 2, Shell and Blink. Blink is superior to the Armor spell, so much in a low level party like I did. What Armor does is cut the damage you take from physical attacks in half. If your highest HP character has only 1386hp, and the enemy is doing 3000 damage, that equals: one hit kill. Blink is a vastly underrated spell, at least in my previous playthroughs of this game.

I beat Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer on DS recently, got a taste for that sort of classic roguelike now. Gonna look into it and see what other games I can find in the genre.
To get some screenshots for my next Retrodrome article, I ended up beating Bokosuka Wars... something I would not have done otherwise, that game is /awful/.

I just completed Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and am playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Both on PS1.
